Basilica di San Vicinio
The Basilica di San Vicinio overlooks Piazza Tito Maccio Plauto, the heart of social life in Sarsina. The town's main place of worship, the basilica was built between the 10th and 11th centuries on the remains of an older building dating from Roman or Palaeochristian times. It has the typical architecture of the Romanesque style: above the entrance door, a mosaic lunette depicts San Vicinio and his miraculous collar.
Good to know
- The Basilica di San Vicinio is the cathedral of the Diocese of Cesena-Sarsina.
- The basilica is known for housing the famous chain (collar) of San Vicinio. According to tradition, San Vicinio, bishop of Sarsina, was chosen directly by God, and during prayer and penance he wore an iron collar weighted with a stone. Today it is believed that wearing that collar and receiving a blessing wards off demonic possession.
