Rocca del Sasso

Standing on a rocky outcrop, the Rocca del Sasso is an imposing, well-preserved building, offering views over the whole of the Valmarecchia.

The Rocca Malatestiana in Verucchio is also known as the Rocca del Sasso, after its position, built above the rocky outcrop on which the village stands. It is one of the most imposing and best-preserved Malatesta fortresses in the area: the walkway around the keep offers a striking panorama over the whole of the Valmarecchia; while inside there are many original features, such as the Malatesta family tree displayed in the great Sala Magna.

Good to know

  • This is the fortress where Malatesta da Verucchio was born, better known as “Mastin Vecchio”, founder of the Malatesta dynasty and mentioned in Dante's Divine Comedy.
  • Although in the late thirteenth century the Malatesta set out to conquer Rimini, the fortress remained the family's stronghold, from where they kept watch on their historic rivals in the Montefeltro.
