Antiquarium Comunale

The Antiquarium Comunale is housed in Palazzo degli Anziani, next to the Museo della Marineria, with which it shares its entrance. An interesting trail through finds unearthed in the area introduces visitors to Roman life in Cesenatico and the surrounding countryside. Many everyday objects are on display, alongside items used for funerary rites and working life: kilns, scales, coins and other everyday objects.

Good to know

  • One room of the Antiquarium is devoted to the town’s fortifications that no longer survive: the Rocca and the Torre Pretoria.
  • The historical sources on the Roman settlement of Cesenatico are kept at the Biblioteca Malatestiana in Cesena.
  • The Roman settlement at Cesenatico is confirmed by the discovery of the Fornace romana di Ca’Turchi.

More information

During the Republican period (between the 1st and 2nd centuries BC) a small but thriving Roman settlement stood in the Cesenatico area, and also in the Republican period (4th century), when the settlement was called Ad Novas. It is thought to have been a stopping place for travellers, offering rest and refreshment, and a resting point for horses.
