Montefeltro

Montefeltro is a historic region that takes in parts of the Marche (Pesaro-Urbino), Emilia-Romagna (the western side of the province of Rimini), Tuscany (Arezzo) and the Republic of San Marino.

It is rough, mountainous country, home to the Sasso Simone e Simoncello regional park, and it was the stage of the war between the da Montefeltro family of the Duchy of Urbino and the Malatesta lords of Rimini, which in the fifteenth century left blood on the fortresses and castles of both cities.

Today Montefeltro corresponds to the Unione Montana del Montefeltro, around Urbino, and to the Comunità Montana dell’Alta Valmarecchia, around Rimini. It has towns known for their food, such as Talamello, famous for its pit-cured cheese, and Sant’Agata Feltria, famous for its white truffle; Pennabilli, with the "places of the soul" of the poet Tonino Guerra; and Novafeltria, with its mines and its old mills.
