Palio del Niballo

The Palio del Niballo in Faenza is one of the oldest medieval jousts in Italy, inaugurated in 1164 to mark the passage of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Five districts compete in the horse races, each preceded by a costumed procession that recreates an aspect of 15th-century life (social, civic, military). This is an event felt deeply even by the young: riders who keep the tradition alive on one side, and supporters who fill the stands with the colours of their district on the other. The Palio del Niballo is held on the last Sunday of June.

Good to know

• Since the first edition of the Palio coincides with the arrival of Frederick Barbarossa in Faenza, the event is also known as the “Giostra del Barbarossa”.
• The five competing districts are: Rione Bianco (Borgo Durbecco), Rione Giallo, Rione Nero, Rione Rosso, Rione Verde.
• The winning rider is awarded the Torre d’Oro; the loser gets the key that closes the playing field.
• The processions that precede the races set off from Piazza del Popolo and reach the stadium, where the races take place. 400 participants take part in costume.
