Grotta Tanaccia
The Grotta Tanaccia lies in the Parco Regionale della Vena del Gesso, in the countryside around Brisighella. It is the best known of the caves that open up in the Vena del Gesso Romagnola, a system reaching 200 m below sea level and running for 2 km, although only 500 m can be visited. The cave is made up of several chambers, one of which is home to a colony of bats (the guano chamber).
Good to know
- Grotta Tanaccia has been frequented by people since the Copper Age. Archaeological digs at the entrance to the caves have brought to light artefacts dating back to prehistoric times; the cave was used as a burial site until the late Bronze Age.
- To visit the cave you will need rubber boots or walking boots and a (preferably waterproof) overall.
- The first chambers are covered on foot; the final stretch has to be crossed on all fours. The visit is not recommended for children under 10, older visitors, pregnant women or people who suffer from claustrophobia.
