Piazza I Maggio
Although it has been renamed and restored several times, for the people of Cattolica, Piazza I Maggio has always been the square by the sea. At its centre stands the distinctive three-mermaid fountain, dating from 1928. In the 1980s the square was redesigned, with the aim of enlarging it and turning it into the town's tourist hub.
Good to know
- Where the Fontana delle Sirene now stands, in the 1800s there was a quarantine station and a health and customs post.
- Giuseppe Casalini, the sculptor from Forlì who created the Fontana delle Sirene, modelled the sea creatures on his 19-year-old daughter.
- In 1883, the first bathing establishment in Cattolica was built on the square.
Other information
After the works of the 1980s, the square took on its current appearance, with the Fontana delle Sirene and the garden linked to the piazza (reached through a gateway): the setting for the Fontane danzanti show.
