The Sposalizio del mare is the oldest and most heartfelt historical reenactment in Cervia. First held in 1445, it has taken place every May ever since, recreating the symbolic moment when the town and the sea are “married”. The event is highly distinctive: boats parade in procession along the harbour, carrying both civic and religious authorities. It is the Bishop who takes the ring, engraved with the words “Cervia Sposalizio del mare, anno …”, ties it to a ribbon and throws it into the water.
After the throw, the bravest locals swim out towards the ring; whoever retrieves it brings it back to shore, sealing the marriage between the two. The Sposalizio di Cervia takes place on the afternoon of Ascension Day, but the celebrations last several days, filling Cervia with festivities, stalls, events and plenty of good Romagnol food.
