As is well known, San Giovanni in Marignano is also known by the name "Il Granaio dei Malatesta" (the Malatesta granary), because the town once stored much of the grain harvested across the Rimini lordship. In particular, from the Middle Ages onwards, grain pits were dug that served not only to store food but also to protect it from enemy theft. There are around 200 pits across the area, 128 of which are underground.
