Teatro Massari
The Teatro Massari was built in the 17th century. Originally an oratory, over time it was put to various uses: a shelter for orphans and widows, a woodshed and a pig-scalding house. In short, it came a long way before this building was transformed into the elegant Italian-style theatre used today for performances by national and local artists.
Good to know
- The theatre's life on stage began in 1821, when it started being used as a rehearsal room by an amateur drama company.
- In 1855 the same performers invested in its restoration, building the tiers of boxes set into the horseshoe-shaped structure, the wings and the painted curtains.
- During the Fascist period (from 1932) it became a cinema, used to screen films made by the Istituto Luce. It became the theatre we know today from 1982.
