Domus del chirurgo
This is the house of Eutyches, a surgeon who lived in Rimini in the 2nd century AD. Stone walls, mosaic floors and 150 original medical instruments make for a journey back in time like no other!
The "Casa del chirurgo" is a Roman-era building dating from the 2nd century AD, uncovered in 1989, in the historic centre of Rimini, and opened to the public in 2007. The complex covers 700 square metres and is protected by visible glass walls: a system of walkways lets visitors view what remains of the house, mosaic floors, dividing walls between rooms and numerous decorative features. Its name comes from the large number of finds recovered there, which can be traced back to the equipment of a surgeon and are now kept at the nearby Museo della Città "Luigi Tonini".
Good to know
- The Domus was discovered by chance in the late 1980s by a worker who, while removing a plant, dug a little too deep and found a mosaic.
- Among the more than 150 tools of the trade recovered are scalpels, forceps, probes, chisels, scales and bronze measuring cups, along with a number of glass and terracotta containers.
- An operating room was also identified in the house, as well as a waiting room for patients.
- The Domus is thought to have been home to a military doctor named Eutyches, of eastern, possibly Greek, origin. Numerous Greek inscriptions are in fact found throughout the complex. The refinement of its decorative elements suggests he was a highly educated and wealthy man.
